Bulletproof Coffee: The Breakfast of Champions?

It seems one of the biggest hurdles people have with adapting to a primal diet and lifestyle is, in one word – FAT.

The problem is twofold:

1. A long reinforced mental block on eating fats in order to get healthy and lean. I mean.. really.. eat fat, to lose fat? A literal conundrum.

2. An actual physical, dietary, hurdle. In that it can sometimes be difficult to get enough fats in your diet. (Especially considering the optimal diet is at least 50% healthy dietary fats)

Keeping these two points in mind –  It’s safe to say that getting the proper amount of healthy fats in the proper amounts is an all too common fail point for lots of people!

Then, consider that a significant amount of those dietary fats are most needed in the morning – in order to prime your all too important hormone production for the rest of the day – And it’s easy to see that this is one area of your dietary habits that you can’t afford to get wrong.

Enter Bulletproof Coffee

If this is the first time you’re hearing about bulletproof coffee – Then I’m sorry to inform you that you’re slightly  late to the party. It’s a fast growing trend that you would’ve inevitably stumbled upon – Much like you just did.

Bulletproof coffee is the creation of blogger and self described “biohacker” Dave Asbrey of BulletProofExec.com. To summarize really quick what exactly BP coffee is: You blend grass fed butter, and coconut oil, with your coffee. That’s it.. Pretty simple.

It Tastes Better Than it Sounds.

Don’t worry, if the thought of putting butter in your coffee initially sounds less than appetizing to you – you’re not alone. But rest assured that BP coffee is quite delicious and even somewhat addictive. Surprisingly, once all of the ingredients are have been blended together – a frothy, rich, filling, fatty (in a good kinda way!) beverage is the result.

That said, cast aside your concerns of taste, and decide whether you want to try it or not based on it’s nutritional make-up, and purported health benefits.

Fats: The Building Blocks of Hormones

The main goal is to get plenty of those vital fats first thing in the morning and set your body up for optimal hormone production for the rest of the day. Makes total sense, really.

The grassfed butter is packed with these nutrients and other fat soluble vitamins (not least of which is vitamin K – which the American diet is sorely deficient in) that also facilitate optimal hormone production.  Meanwhile the coconut oil provides the medium chain triglycerides are that serve as the perfect fuel for the brain.

Combine this with the well-known energizing effects of the good ole coffee bean and you have a concoction that turns out to be a pretty good way to start a day.

If you’re like many, and have a hard time correlating the word “butter” with the word “healthy”, here’s an infographic that should make it a little easier to make the connection, and illustrate why it’s so important for the butter to be of the grassfed variety:

Try Not to Overuse it as a Meal Replacement

Not only is Bulletproof coffee delicious and healthy – it’s also very filling – Which can be handy when you’re on the go and won’t have much time for food until lunch time rolls around!

In fact, a quick protein shake followed by a BP coffee in your favorite thermos to go, can make for a very convenient solution on those mornings when time is in short supply. Ideally, of course, you’d want to make it a habit to make time for a full breakfast meal in the mornings.. It certainly beats granola bars, or the drive-through.

That said, to completely abandon a robust breakfast meal for the BP coffee routine isn’t something that’s ideal – There’s really no better way to start your day than with free range eggs and a few pieces of farm fresh bacon, but if you’re looking for a quick breakfast option that’ll taste awesome, keep you full, give you energy, and provide you with nutrients that support  optimal brain function and hormone production – Bulletproof coffee is pretty be hard to beat.

How To Get Started

Here’s the link to the original article from BulletProofExec.com where you can get more specifics on how to make Bulletproof coffee, but it’s a really simple recipe that, for some reason, seems to get over complicated!

Like we said before – It’s actually pretty simple:

  1. Buy some Grassfed Butter (popular brands such as “Kerrygold” can usually be found in health food stores or some larger grocery stores in the deli cheese sections)
  2. Buy a good quality coconut oil.
  3. Make coffee.
  4. Blend about 8-10 ounces with about one tablespoon of both the butter and oil for about 30 seconds.

There are other things you can try like adding vanilla, and/or cinnamon, or even a couple squares of dark chocolate (yum), but the above is the basic Bulletproof coffee recipe – Give it a try and let us know what you think!
